There's a simple explanation for LeBron James' decision to avoid the Slam Dunk Contest.
When LeBron launched pre-game dunk contests after the disappointing 2013 Slam Dunk Contest, Magic Johnson offered a $1 million to the winner of the next Slam Dunk Contest if LeBron participated. LeBron declined with the comment, "I don't do it for anyone besides our team."
The whole exchange was like an episode of Seinfeld.
There was a lot of commentary defending LeBron by people who make money off his performance on the court and a lot of commentary questioning LeBron by people who make money on him for what they say off the court.
At the end of the day, it's real simple: There's no valid excuse for LeBron to avoid the dunk contest. It's bitchassness, pure and simple.
LeBron always talks about his understanding for the history of the game, so why doesn't he follow the great superstars before him and participate in the dunk contest?
Does LeBron understand how weak it is to refuse to do something Dwight Howard's lame ass found the courage to do - 3 times?
I wouldn't be surprised if LeBron was using the pre-game dunk contests to build up his confidence with positive reinforcement from the "oohs and aahs" of fans until he got the nerve to go and compete in the real Slam Dunk Contest.
Refusing to participate in the dunk contest doesn't mean LeBron's not a great player, but talking and tweeting about it before the dunk contest and then saying, "I choose not to dunk," when the time comes is about as wack as Dwyane Wade's new nickname.

ReplyDeleteNo, the dunk "contest" is not stupid and never was. The dunk contest showcased the talents of every great dunker in the game since its inception from Dr.J to Dominique Wilkins to Michael Jordan to Shawn Kemp to Kobe Bryant to Vince Carter to Dwight Howard to Blake Griffin. The only thing that makes the dunk contest stupid is when the great dunkers of an era refuse to participate.

Blake Griffin jumped over the low part(impressively) of a car. Dwight Howard put on a cape. Gerald Green blew out a candle on the rim. These are lame prop gimmicks. Athletic ability is cool and all but if I really wanted subjectively scored contests (and I don't) I'd watch gymnastics or figure skating. I like basketball, not blown up spectacle. All of all star weekend qualifies as the latter. No one you mentioned save Jordan can even pretend to be able to hold Lebron's jock as a player or a talent.
